Announcing a Lenten Cinema Divina

Hi, everyone. We'd like to inform you of two special events we've planned for this Lent.

Join us right here at the Pauline Book Center the evenings of February 19 and February 26 (beginning at 7:00 p.m.) for a prayerful listening to the Word of God as it's expressed through film clips touching upon the mysteries of our redemption.
We'll explore the themes present in various popular films, seeing how they tie in with the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ and what they have to say to each of us. Allowing these themes to speak to us will help us to approach Lent in an entirely new and deeper way.

Look for more information to come a little closer to the actual dates!

It's Finally HERE!

Pope Benedict's newest Encyclical Letter, Saved in Hope (Spe Salvi), just arrived, and copies are now available for purchase. The document is 60 pages long and costs $6.95. We also have the Spanish edition available.

Sr. Susan's Six-Week Study Group for
Saved in Hope

In conjunction with the document's release, we're pleased to announce that we are organizing another study group for those who are interested in delving into this rich text. Many of you will remember that Sr. Susan James offered a six-week study group on last year's apostolic exhortation on the Eucharist, Sacrament of Charity.

The study group for Saved in Hope will also extend over a six-week period, meeting on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. beginning April 22 and ending May 27. For details and registration, please call Sr. Susan at (650)703-1106. (You can also register by coming in to the Center.)

All are welcome!

Padre Pio's body to be exhumed

We've fielded a couple of questions recently regarding the news that Padre Pio's body will be exhumed and exposed for public veneration in the shrine of San Giovanni Rotondo, Rome, during the coming year.

The local Archbishop, Domenico D'Ambrosio, explained that because 2008 is the 40th anniversary of Padre Pio's death, public veneration of his body will be taking place sometime this year, although the timing has not yet been confirmed. It seems Church officials are consulting with experts regarding the exhumation and preservation of the saint's remains. Close to one million pilgrims a year visit the saint's shrine in San Giovanni Rotondo.

If you'd like to learn more about Padre Pio's life, we have a number of titles available in our Center, among them:

  • Secrets of a Soul: Padre Pio's Letters to His Spiritual Director

and, for children:

  • Padre Pio Comic Book

  • and our Encounter the Saints book, Saint Pio of Pietrelcina: Rich in Love

Also, in case you haven't had a chance to check out our postulants' blog (http://fsppostulants.blogspot.com/), we invite you to do so...and to tell others about it.

Many thanks!

Happy Conversion!

Last Friday, the 25th, was the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. Yes, that's right--we honor that moment in the history of salvation when Paul was completely conquered by Christ.

"Breathing murderous threats" against the fledgling Christian community, the pharisee Saul determinedly set out for the city of Damascus. His mission? To arrest and imprison any who professed the name of Jesus. This same Jesus showed the fullness of mercy to the young man, literally stopping Saul in his tracks and transforming him into the greatest apostle of all time and a true vessel of Christ's love. To his credit, Paul allowed himself to be grasped by Christ, and so must we.

It's a tremendous story of grace that can be found in two places in the Scriptures: Acts chapter 9 and Galatians chapter 1.

Our Founder, Blessed James Alberione, naturally wrote a lot about St. Paul. Speaking of the Conversion, he has this to say: "Saul, the enemy of Jesus, becomes his intimate friend, to the point of living of him: 'Christ...lives in me' (Gal 2:20). And nothing--neither life nor death, neither the hardships he had to endure nor the prisons which he sanctified; neither the chains that he bore nor the shipwrecks he endured; neither the beatings nor the floggings--separated him from Christ. 'I am certain' (Rom 8:38), he said. He was certain of the grace of God and of the power which came to him from Jesus Christ."

Pope Benedict has declared this coming year to be a year dedicated to St. Paul. It extends from June 2008 to June 2009. If you'd like to read more about the Apostle, we can suggest a wonderful biography on his life. Written by historian Alain Decaux, Paul, Least of the Apostles: The Story of the Most Unlikely Witness to Christ gives an intimate look into the mind and heart of an incredible giant of faith.

Saints of the Americas

Today is the feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, first American-born canonized saint. Appropriately, last night's book club touched upon her life. Our next book, up for discussion on February 8, is American Saints: Five Centuries of Heroic Sanctity on the American Continents.

If you are interested in joining our book club, please call Sr. Armanda at 650-703-2876.

New Encyclical on Hope

We just received word that the Pope's newest document, Spe Salvi (Saved in Hope), will be available for purchase by mid-January. Call 650-369-4390 to reserve your copy today!

By the way, we also published and carry the books of the late Cardinal Van Thuan, which Pope Benedict refers to in his encyclical letter. In the 1970s, Van Thuan was imprisoned by the Vietnamese government for 13 years (several of which he spent in solitary confinement). His story, recounted in Testimony of Hope, is one of incredible courage and faith. Also, Testimony of Hope contains the spiritual exercises that Van Thuan preached to John Paul II's papal household. It makes for ideal Lenten reading!

Baby Jesus Birthday Party

We hosted our "Birthday Party" for Jesus on Saturday, December 8th. Highlights of the day included games and contests--with prizes, naturally!--for children, picture-taking with Baby Jesus (like this great shot of our friend Paloma), and yummy birthday cake. It was a wonderful day, and a real opportunity to help families reinforce their desire to put Christ at the center of their Christmas celebration.
