Are you ready for the new year?

This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent, the beginning of the new year in the Church. Are you ready for the new year?
Following the daily scripture readings from Mass can help us enter into the season of Advent and the whole liturgical year. Our new book Word of Life helps us to recognize the richness of Scripture as we begin this new year.
"Word of Life offers a series of Biblical reflections focused on the liturgical readings for each day. Throughout the year, the Church spreads before us a rich feast drawn from the word of God. When we prayerfully ponder that word, it gradually penetrates our hearts and minds, thus transforming our lives." (from the introduction)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

We just finished praying together (hence the lit candles!), and we prayed for all of you and your intentions during this Thanksgiving holiday.

I can't think of a more fitting prayer of thanksgiving for this post than that of St. Paul to the Philippians. Think of it as being addressed to you personally!

I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.

It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus.

And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 3:11)

Feast of Blessed James Alberione

Today Paulines the world over (that would include us!) celebrate the feast of our Founder, Blessed James Alberione. How fitting that this feast falls around Thanksgiving time. It provides us with one more reason to thank God for his providential care in raising up this heroic apostle, who poured out his life harnessing the powers of media to communicate the love that God has for each of us.

I never knew Fr. Alberione personally (he died in 1971), but I've witnessed his spirit alive in the many sisters with whom I've lived. They too spend themselves every day to proclaim God's gracious gift in Jesus, who is our Way, our Truth, and our Life. Now that's something to be thankful for!

Blessed James Alberione, pray for us!

Something unique to share with you!

Hi! I'm Sr. Kelly and this is my first post on our blog. I hope that this will be the first of many posts!
In our Pauline Books and Media Center you can find many different items to share with your friends and family. I’d like to tell you about something very unique that is only available at our Book Center. Hand made cards from our very own Sr. Armanda. Each card is one of a kind! Sr. Armanda has made many cards for Christmas, a few of them are pictured on the left.
If you have any questions for me feel free to comment. I look forward to meeting many of you while I'm here in Redwood City!

Fr. Kennedy to speak on Nov. 13

Our good friend Fr. Kevin Kennedy will be joining us once again, this time to share his insights into St. Paul and the journey of Christian discipleship.

As many of you know, Fr. Kennedy is a priest of the archdiocese who currently serves as chaplain at Sequoia and Kaiser Hospitals. He is a wonderful and engaging speaker, and his presentation will explore how, for Saul turned Paul, the road to Damascus marked the beginning of an extraordinary relationship with the Risen Christ and shaped his understanding of Christian discipleship.

Please join us for this free lecture right here at our Book Center on next Thursday, November 13th, at 7:00 p.m.

Welcome, Sr. Kelly!

Rejoice with us! Our community has been blessed with a new (albeit temporary) addition: Sr. Kelly Tyler, one of our novices, will be with us here in Redwood City until next March. She is here for her "apostolic experience," a special time in her Pauline formation during which she leaves the novitiate house in Boston (bet she won't miss those Boston winters!) to immerse herself fully in the life and mission of the Daughters of St. Paul.

Sr. Kelly got here on Sunday (yes--during that rainy spell we just had...), and she has already been helping at the Book Center on Broadway. This weekend, she will also be participating in the parish display which we will be having at St. Matthew's Church in San Mateo. We've been telling her how Californians are the FRIENDLIEST people on the planet, and she's eagerly looking forward to meeting many of you! In the meantime, our community has grown again to four sisters (thank you, Jesus!)

I'll try to interview Kelly in an upcoming post to share a little more with you about her background and especially her journey in religious life so far. Please keep her and this important time in her formation in your prayers.
