Faith & Film Friday: The Count of Monte Cristo

This Friday's presentation is The Count of Monte Cristo, a film based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas (who also wrote The Three Musketeers). This is a classic tale dealing with the themes of justice and revenge. Because of the serious nature of the film, it's rated PG-13 (not recommended for children younger than 13).

The film has been done a number of times over the years. We will be watching the most recent, 2002 version, starring James Caviezel. Below is a trailer for the film. We hope you will be able to join us Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Faith & Film Friday: Remember the Titans

Our film presentation for this Friday evening is Remember the Titans. This is a great family-friendly movie that recounts the true story of a newly appointed African-American coach and his high school team as they struggle through their first season as a racially integrated group of players. The 2000 film stars Denzel Washington in one of his best roles ever. It runs around 120 minutes.

Please bring a friend and join us this Friday evening at 6:30. Until then, enjoy the trailer below.

Faith & Film Friday: Amistad

The next film in our summer Faith & Film series is the powerful drama Amistad. A true story, this film by Steven Spielberg touches on the sacred dignity of the human person and the person's inalienable right to freedom. It features memorable performances from Djimon Hounsou (in a breakthrough role) and Anthony Hopkins (who received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of lawyer John Quincy Adams). It also stars the always wonderful Morgan Freeman and a young Matthew Mcconaughey.

Please join us this Friday, June 19th, at 6:30 p.m. for this unforgettable film.

Faith & Film Friday: Babette's Feast

The film we will be showing this Friday evening, June 11, beginning at 6:30 p.m., is Babette's Feast. We hope you'll be able to attend!

Babette's Feast
is a 1987 film based on a story by Danish author Isak Dinesen (who also wrote the story that inspired the Academy-award winning film Out of Africa). The first Danish film to win an Academy Award (it's dubbed into English), Babette's Feast centers around a French woman refugee who experiences unexpected good fortune and uses it to prepare a sumptuous feast for the two women spinsters who have taken her in. The generous and loving preparation and the lavish offering of dishes is reminiscent of the Eucharistic Banquet and the bounteous generosity of our God.

Enjoy this "preview," a collection of excerpts from critical reviews; we hope they whet your appetite :) !

Summer Friday Faith & Film Series

Not looking forward to watching TV reruns or the latest wild summer reality show? We've got just the antidote: our Summer Faith & Film series begins this week! Every Friday until the end of August we will be showing a film here at our Pauline Center, followed by a brief reflection and sharing together on the movie themes and how they relate to our lives as Catholic Christians. Please join us beginning promptly at 6:30 p.m. each Friday evening.

This Friday's presentation is the final installment of the film A.D. (please see below for the trailer). You can check out the other titles in our summer film series by going to the calendar of events at the bottom of the blog.

Also, please note that most of the films we will be viewing together deal with more serious subject matter, but we've also tried to include films for general family viewing (so you can sometimes bring the kids!) The films with an asterisk (*) are family-friendly.

We hope you can make it to this summer movie series--a unique way to grow in faith by engaging popular culture . We'll even provide the popcorn!
