The next time you visit Pauline Books and Media, you will see new faces! In these days two new Sisters have arrived to join Our Pauline community here in Redwood City. Sister Nancy is coming from our community in Boston and Sister Gioan Lihn joins us from our community in Hawaii! In two weeks, Sister Neville will complete the community. She is coming from Philadelphia!

We are so excited to have these sisters with us! Please stop by the center and give them a warm welcome.
In the weeks to come the Sisters will share with you some of their experiences and background.

For the past two and a half years, it has been a great joy for me to be here in Redwood City. When I arrived you welcomed me with open hearts. Now it is time for me to say farewell. On Tuesday, October 4th, I leave for our community in Charleston. You are God's blessing in my life! The many times we have come together at the Friday Movie nights, the Fiction Book Club, the Women's book club, and our new Jesus of Nazareth Study group, or when you have come into the book center, all of these have been moments which have enriched my life! As I leave California I carry you all in my heart and in my prayers. Be assured that each day during my hours of Adoration, I will bring you before the Lord.

Lectionary Movie nights September through June

September 2nd we will begin a new year of our Lectionary Based Movie Nights. We gather every first Friday. This year we will take our Movies and scriptures from the book: Ten Commandments; Light Camera, Faith.

Each time we meet we will discuss one of the commandments in light of the Movie we watch. I have already prepared the first five movies. September's theme is the Ten Commandments in general, then each month we will focus on one commandment beginning with the First.

Please keep this in mind when you are planning your events for the up coming months.

Jesus of Nazareth Vol. II Study Group

On July 14th six people joined the first meeting for our Study of Jesus of Nazareth Vol.II. It was a good beginning. We have planned to use one chapter of the book each time we meet and use the study guide to prepare for our sharing each month.

Our next time together is Sept.8th. Please mark your calendars. We will meet every second Thursday of the month at 6pm. The meeting will last about one hour. You are welcomed to come to all of our studies days or come when you can. Just remember that each month we will take a new chapter, so if you miss a month we will be sharing on the next chapter.

Pauline Books and Media presents Trailblazing Deacon John Green, Founder of Emmaus Ministries

Deacon John Green will be our guest speaker on Wednesday, June 22nd. His presentation will focus on Missional Living and will share his insights regarding how the Lord guides us forward and sustains us in the mission to which he calls us as disciples of Jesus.

John Green is the founder of Emmaus Ministries and is known for his work on the streets of Chicago. His ministry began over twenty years ago as a result of Green being struck by the horror of a homeless man throwing himself off a midtown-Manhattan building-right before his eyes. He is the author of recently published book Streetwalking with Jesus - Reaching Out In Justice and Mercy.

The presentation will begin at 7 pm followed by a Meet and Greet, where Deacon John Green will sign his new book.

New Study group on Jesus of Nazareth Vol. II begin July 7th

On July 7th at 6 pm we will begin an on going study of Jesus of Nazareth vol.II at Pauline books and Media. Our first meeting will be informal as we plan together how many chapters to discuss each month. Dennis McCourt will be the facilitator for the group and will be using the discussion guide that was produced by Ignatius press.

Pope Benedict says " Only in this second volume of Jesus of Nazareth do we encounter the decisive sayings and events of Jesus life...I hope that I have been granted an insight into the figure of our Lord that can be helpful to all readers who seek to encounter Jesus and believe in Him."

I began to read this books during Lent and found it a beautiful mediation as I journeyed with Jesus during His last days on earth.

This is a great way to listen to the insights of others and discuss the different events from Jesus entrance into Jerusalem to His Resurrection.

It's not too Late for Metanoia This Lent!

With the ushering in of Gaudete Sunday, we have officially reached the midway point of our Lenten Season. It's not too late to experience mentanoia -- a transformative change of heart -- this Lent!

Good reading materials can offer you an ideal opportunity to deepen your faith, and turn your heart more fully toward Christ. Perhaps this year, you can learn more about the deeper meaning of the practice of fasting through Niklaus Brantschen's book, Fasting. Or, maybe these final weeks of Lent would be the ideal time to learn the ancient practice of Lectio Divino (or praying with Sacred Scriptures) through the book, Lenten Grace, which is the fruit of the prayers of our Sisters.

This may also be a good time to pick up a copy of one of several different versions of the Stations of the Cross to pray with these final weeks of Lent. This ancient practice brings us into touch with the great love of our Savior who walked the way of the cross for each of us, while also offering us the opportunity to deepen our commitment to carry our own crosses with love.

Faith & Film Lectionary Night: Tender Mercies

Join us tomorrow evening, Friday January 6th, for another evening of entertainment & faith-filled discussion!

We will be gathering at 6:30 p.m. for a movie, followed by a discussion of its themes as they relate to this Sunday's Gospel (Matthew 3:13-17). This is a great way to prepare for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord!

Our film will be the 1983 release, Tender Mercies, starring Robert Duvall, Tess Harper, Betty Buckley, and Ellen Barkin. The film runs 89 minutes, and is a story of heartfelt conversion. Mac Sledge (Robert Duvall), a washed up country singer who has turned to alcoholism and hit bottom, is given a second chance by a widow (Tess Harper) and her young son. Appreciating Art & Beauty with Sr Armanda this Advent Season

Sr. Jamie Paula: What does art mean to you?

Sr. Armanda: Art is an expression of beauty, and therefore an expression of God. It is capable of containing so much meaning. It just depends to what degree you want to look for it. I especially like art that is more complex and may not have an immediate attraction to it. It can often have deeper, hidden meanings.

Sr. Jamie Paula: When did you start making cards?

Sr. Armanda: For a long time, I just kept every beautiful card I received because I hated the thought of throwing away something so beautiful. I accumulated many cards, and wanted to find a way to use them.

I also used to keep a journal. Over time, I wanted to do something different and decided to do my journaling by expressing myself through images and art. I started using the images from the cards for my journal.

I also decided I wanted to recycle the cards in some way, and so I started collecting papers and other colorful, beautiful things like ribbon, buttons, and stickers. Other people started donating all their extra cards and other odds and ends to me.

I had always made cards here and there to give to people. And then about three years ago, I was in the infirmary in our Motherhouse in Boston recuperating from hip replacement. While there, I noticed that the older Sisters didn’t have their own set of videos on the Saints, so I asked if it might be possible to get a set for the infirmary. At this time, I started making cards, and had 100 or so cards by the time I left the infirmary. I decided to sell the cards to raise proceeds for the older Sisters to build up their video library.

Sr. Jamie Paula: What do you enjoy about making them?

Sr. Armanda: I enjoy the creative process. I enjoy taking four or five different things from different cards and making something new and unique out of them. I also like looking at all the beautiful images, and the quiet time that I devote to it. But, even though I say I enjoy the quiet, I also enjoy watching television shows on design and art while working on my cards – they give me inspiration. It gives me a certain sense of satisfaction to find a strange little piece of paper or odd little picture, and be able to incorporate it into something new and unique – everything is useful.

Sr. Jamie Paula: Is there anything you want people to know about the cards you make?

Sr. Armanda: Each card is unique and individual – there are never two alike since I use pieces from all different cards. I also like to make sure each card has meaning to it. I not only make Christmas cards, but cards for all other occasions, too, and I try to keep in mind what people might like.

December Faith & Film Lectionary Night: Joseph of Nazareth

For this month’s Faith & Film Lectionary Night, we will be presenting Joseph of Nazareth, a great film to kick off the Advent season. This is a feature film on the story of St. Joseph – carpenter, husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus. This presentation captures the humanity, holiness and the deeply spiritual aspects of the man as he experiences the profound mysteries of the divine conception and birth of Jesus Christ. We follow St. Joseph, as the protector of the Holy Family, through the journey of the incredible challenges he faces in protecting and guiding Jesus amidst the threats on his life. This is a wonderful movie for the entire family so we hope that you’ll join us this Friday for this rare and beautiful look at the life of St. Joseph.

Elaine & Sue: Meet Two Faithful Customers

What first brought you to Pauline Books & Media?

Elaine: I heard that there was a Catholic book store on Broadway and was interested in checking it out and supporting them. I was excited to have a bookstore so close to me where I could go and get Catholic books, and not have to drive all the way to San Jose. The bookstore is definitely a Godsend.

Sue: I used to visit the store only around Christmas time to get gifts for my family. More recently, I discovered the chapel inside the bookstore and started going there regularly to pray. There’s a notebook inside the chapel where you can write your intentions, as the sisters pray for our intentions daily. I used to write very lengthy and verbose intentions (actually, I still do), and I’m sure that’s how the sisters first came to know me.

What particular events or activities do you take part in here at the Center? What would you say to someone who is thinking about participating?

Elaine: I go there to shop, participate in Faith and Film Nights, and the Saints Book Club. Being part of the book club has made me read books that I never would have read before. We learn about the great saints of our Church, and find out that they are regular human beings that just happened to do great things. I also go to the bookstore to visit the chapel; the Blessed Sacrament is present in the tabernacle, and it’s a peaceful place to go and pray. It’s a great place to hang out and volunteer and I encourage people to come here to find out more about the Catholic faith. I’ve met many wonderful people there.

Sue: I partake in Faith and Film nights, attend guest speaker events, and am about to attend my first Saints Book Club gathering in December. I also help out as needed, either at the book center or at the book exhibits. I would encourage anyone to just jump into one of the activities and see if its for you - that’s what I did. And if you have any questions about the activities, I would encourage people to come visit the book center, and talk to any of the sisters or staff, or Elaine and me.

What keeps you coming back?

Elaine: The great love of the Daughters of St. Paul keeps me coming back. They are great role models and friends and the book center is like a home away from home. We’re so blessed to have such a comprehensive bookstore right in our backyard. The Daughters of St. Paul are international, with book centers all around the world, and they were previously in a location in San Francisco, before they moved here to Redwood City.

Sue: The book center has such a wide selection of things to buy, whether for myself, my family and friends, or my godchildren. Over time, I’ve developed a relationship with the sisters and the staff, and its their open hearts and wisdom that keep me going back. I’ve learned so much just talking to the sisters, and exploring all the resources that the book center has to offer. Its also inspiring to see so many people that come to the book center or to the exhibits with a strong desire to increase their faith. I remember one instance where a woman was so thrilled to see that Spanish books, CDs and DVDs were available. “We’re hungry for this” she remarked, adding that it was difficult to find Spanish religious materials.

Jeanie's poems are infused with common sense, spiritual depth, and warm humor. She has been a regular poetry contributor to the Sun Senior News.

Her down-home style has made her a popular guest speaker with many women's groups. Her standard comment about her poetry is, "If you have to read it twice to understand it, then I didn't write it!"

Join us this Friday, October 1st, for our October Movie Lectionary Night -- where culture and faith come together for an enjoyable evening of faith, film & discussion!

Every first Friday of the month, we will be gathering at 6:30 p.m. to view a film, followed by a discussion of its themes as they relate to Sunday's Gospel.

Tomorrow, we will be viewing The Winslow Boy. Set in early 20th century London right before the dawn of World War I, it is the tale of a father who defends the honor of his 14 year old son, despite consequences for himself and for his family. This drama is rated G, and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

A native of Southern CA, I grew up in Ontario and attended college at University of California, San Diego, where I received my B.A. in Human Development prior to entering. I spent the last three years as a member of our community in Alexandria, VA where I was the coordinator for Exhibits and Outreach, as well as the Local Vocationist.

Now, I am here in Redwood City beginning my studies Part-time, while also acting as the Coordinator for our School Book Fairs and helping in the Book Center and with Exhibits as needed.

This film is rated PG-13. Because it deals with serious themes, including gang violence, parental discretion is advised.

This is a classic tale dealing with the themes of justice and revenge. Because of the serious nature of the film, it's rated PG-13 (not recommended for children younger than 13).

Faith & Film Friday: Babette's Feast

The film we will be showing this Friday evening, June 11, beginning at 6:30 p.m., is Babette's Feast. We hope you'll be able to attend!

Babette's Feast is a 1987 film based on a story by Danish author Isak Dinesen (who also wrote the story that inspired the Academy-award winning film Out of Africa). The first Danish film to win an Academy Award (it's dubbed into English), Babette's Feast centers around a French woman refugee who experiences unexpected good fortune and uses it to prepare a sumptuous feast for the two women spinsters who have taken her in. The generous and loving preparation and the lavish offering of dishes is reminiscent of the Eucharistic Banquet and the bounteous generosity of our God.

Every Friday until the end of August we will be showing a film here at our Pauline Center, followed by a brief reflection and sharing together on the movie themes and how they relate to our lives as Catholic Christians. The newest album from our Daughters of St. Paul choir is another collection of sacred chant. The title of the CD is Stella Maris which, for those not familiar with Latin, is one of the Blessed Mother's titles. It means "Star of the Sea."

This album features lovely ancient yet timeless melodies written in honor of Mary. It's a great album to listen to during the month of May, and it would make the perfect gift for Mother's Day.

Please join us Thursday, February 25, for a lecture by three of the seminarians from St. Patrick's in Menlo Park. Carlo Perez, Alexander Quiros-Castillo, and Tom Martin are the authors of the new book, Prayer in the Bible. The book discusses prayer and encounter with God as portrayed in scripture.

We're pleased to welcome these local authors (and future priests!), so please join us February 25th at 7:00 p.m. for their inspiring talk.

Until then, here is some biographical information on our speakers:

Carlo Perez (Manila, Philippines – 1980) studied Philosophy at San Carlos Seminary in Manila. He is completing his Theology studies at St. Patrick’s Seminary and University in Menlo Park, CA, and is serving the Diocese of Sacramento.

Alexandro Quiros-Castillo (Palmares, Costa Rica – 1971) is a seminarian of the Diocese of Oakland, fourth year of Theology. He holds college degrees in Business and Philosophy. He worked for a software development company and as a consultant for the National Director of Missions in Costa Rica.

Tom Martin (San Francisco, California, USA – 1963) earned a B.A. from the University of San Francisco. He studied Classical and Linguistic Philosophy and History. He has been a California Province Jesuit and served as an aide to the Mayor of San Francisco. He is a second year Theology student at St. Patrick’s Seminary.

This week Lent begins, an opportune time to renew our spiritual lives and deepen our Christian commitment. To that end we have two great recommendations: Lenten Grace, a collection of short reflections by our sisters, Daughters of St. Paul, on the daily lenten readings for Mass. This small treasure trove provides insight from women who have given their lives over to God's Word. It's a beautiful and hope-filled look at how scripture provides light and strength for our life's journey.

Our newest professed Sister!

We are pleased to inform you that this past week one of our novices, Sr. Neville, made her first profession as a Daughter of St. Paul!

Many of you probably remember that Neville was with us for several weeks some time ago. She joined our community for a brief period of apostolic experience. We enjoyed her short stay with us and are thrilled to welcome her now as a temporary professed sister.

Neville is originally from Cameroon, and her mother and several other family members were on hand for the celebration at our novitiate house in Boston. With her profession of the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, she has taken on the new name of Sr. Neville Christine. Please rejoice with us in this newest gift to the Church and to our religious family!

Today the Church observes a feast particularly dear to us Daughters of St. Paul. We celebrate the conversion of the great Apostle--the moment when Paul surrendered himself, body and soul, to Jesus.

For those of us 21st-century people who hope to follow in St. Paul's footsteps, we can only pray--as our Founder, Fr. James Alberione, encouraged us--that the Lord will "conquer" us as he "conquered" Paul. May Jesus transform us into receptive vessels of his grace.

We are still in the initial stages of organizing our Lectio Divina group, which meets every other Tuesday to read and pray the Scriptures together. Two New Saints' Biographies

This Sunday, October 11th, Pope Benedict will canonize two new saints: Jeanne Jugan, foundress of the Little Sisters of the Poor, and Fr. Damien, the famous leper-priest of Molokai. Both of these persons lived heroic, selfless lives that serve as models of inspiration and holiness for others.

We at Pauline Books & Media are very pleased to announce that we have two new publications available on these saints. Song of Silence: The Journey of St. Jeanne Jugan, details the incredible ordeal the saint underwent in establishing her community--including repeated betrayals and rejection (to the point that she was not recognized as the foundress of her own Order until after her death). Faith & Film Night: The Kid

The next feature film presentation in our Lights, Camera...Faith series is Disney's The Kid, starring Bruce Willis. This film ties in with the liturgical readings for this coming Sunday, the Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

If you haven't seen it yet, this is a charming comedic film with important life themes. Here's a great write-up about it from Amazon.com, followed by the trailer. Please join us this Friday, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Disney's The Kid

Russ Duritz (Bruce Willis) is an ultra-cynical, 40-year-old L.A. image consultant who fashions bogus façades for scumbag clients. Oblivious to his own need for a makeover, he's a tyrant in the office (to the chagrin of his sarcastic assistant, played to perfection by Lily Tomlin), and he's emotionally unavailable to the morally centered woman (Emily Mortimer) who senses goodness beneath Russ's hardened veneer. Not a moment too soon, a pudgy kid (Spencer Breslin) mysteriously appears in Russ's life, revealing himself to be Rusty Duritz--that is, Russ's 8-year-old self, arriving by some magic to put the adult Russ's life into beneficial perspective. This variation on A Christmas Carol has Rusty guiding Russ on a tour of his past to reveal how he became a loveless, hard-shelled loser. It takes a bit of smarmy chicken-soup psychology to explain it all, but The Kid is an otherwise charming and involving fantasy, suggesting that perhaps we'd all benefit from a bit of counseling by our younger selves. Written with admirable restraint by Audrey Wells (who brought a similar appeal to The Truth About Cats and Dogs) and directed by Jon Turteltaub (Cool Runnings), the movie doesn't force its supernatural elements or attempt to explain Rusty's existence. It's just a fable for our modern age and a reminder to embrace the better angels of our nature. Delivered with an easy blend of humor and sentiment, that message makes The Kid an unexpected pleasure. Then we here at Pauline Books & Media invite you to explore with us the ancient practice of Lectio Divina--a slow, contemplative, prayerful reading of the scriptures.

Lectio Divina enables us to discern an underlying rhythm in our daily life. Within this rhythm, we discover an increasing ability to offer more of ourselves and our relationships to the Father, and to accept the embrace that God continually extends to us in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ.

To facilitate this encounter with God through his holy Word, we will be meeting twice a month on every other Tuesday, beginning October 13th at 6:30 p.m. If you are interested, please join us for this time of shared contemplation.

Catholic Fiction Book Club--A Correction

Hi, everyone. Just a heads up that our upcoming Catholic Fiction Book Club, which begins NEXT WEEK on September 9th, will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (I've corrected the time on the post below.) Apologies for having misinformed you about the time.

By way of a reminder, the first book we will be covering is Ron Hansen's Exiles. Here is a write-up about the book:

Veteran historical novelist Hansen (whose previous works include Atticus, 1996, and Hitler’s Niece, 1999) brilliantly, if soberly, weaves two interrelated story lines into a riveting novel based on the factual background to the writing of Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopkins’ classic epic poem “The Wreck of the Deutschland.” The two story lines—one, about what drew Hopkins to write the poem, and, two, about the lives of five Catholic nuns who drowned in the grounding of the German liner off the coast of England in 1875—are thematically connected, in addition to the literal one between author and poetic work. Born and raised in the Church of England, Hopkins as a young man not only converted to Roman Catholicism but also became a Jesuit priest. Thus, he was in spiritual exile from his original church and from his family, who were uncomfortable with his conversion, and when sent by the Jesuits to teach in Dublin, he was cast into physical exile from his native country. The five nuns, whose individual stories Hansen brings to light, were being sent into exile in the U.S. by their convent in Germany, in the shadow of the anti-Catholic laws being promulgated by the Bismarck regime. The tragic voyage of the ship the nuns were unfortunate enough to book passage on is itself chronicled with a heart-thumping vividness. --Brad Hooper

New Faith & Film Series: Lights, Camera...Faith!

Due to the interest generated by our summer Faith & Film Series, we are happy to announce that we will be extending this series every first Friday of the month, beginning this coming Friday, September 4th, at 6:30 p.m.

Over the next few weeks we will be viewing a film chosen to illustrate and exemplify the coming Sunday's Gospel, using an approach conceived by one of our own sisters, Sr. Rose Pacatte, who reviews films for St. Anthony Messenger magazine and posts the reviews on her blog. Sr. Rose wrote a series of bestselling books, Lights, Camera...Faith, which offer an exciting approach to faith formation by creating a dialogue between Scripture and Film.

Our first film, this coming Friday, Sept. 4th, at 6:00p.m., will be Mr. Holland's Opus, starring Richard Dreyfus. The film's trailer is posted below. Admission is free! We hope you will be able to join us for this creative way to deepen our faith and love of God's Word.

From Russia to Redwood City

Our Pauline community in Redwood City was reinforced recently with the arrival of Sr. Mary Leonora Wilson, as she transferred from our Russian mission community in Moscow back to the USA Province.

Sr. M. Leonora has been serving outside her homeland for almost 26 years (18 years in

Germany

and 8 years in

Russia

She received a warm, heartfelt welcome from the Sisters in Redwood City and is looking forward to meeting the many friends of our Pauline community as she joins her talents and energies with the gifts of so many others so that the Word of God and His Love “may speed on and triumph”!

There will be new challenges and new joys as Sister begins evangelizing on “home soil” once again.

Faith & Film Night: The Scarlet and the Black

Tomorrow evening's presentation is The Scarlet and the Black, a 1983 made-for-TV movie detailing the true story of Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty. O'Flaherty was an Irish Catholic priest who saved thousands of Jews and prisoners of war during the Nazi occupation of Rome. The film is based on the best-selling book The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican and stars Gregory Peck in the leading role. Christopher Plummer and John Gielgud also star.

Tomorrow night is the close of our summer Faith & Film Fridays; however, by popular demand, we will be continuing the series once a month, beginning in September. Look for more information to follow soon!

Faith & Film Night: Man for All Seasons

This evening's presentation is the classic film, Man for All Seasons. Based on the play by Robert Bolt, this masterpiece stars Paul Scofield in an award-winning role as St. Thomas More. The film deals with More's refusal to compromise his conscience in the matter of King Henry VIII's decision to divorce his wife (who is unable to bear him a son) and remarry.

This is an extraordinary film--certainly one worth watching over and over again. We hope you will join us this evening, beginning at 6:30 p.m., to view and discuss the film.

Catholic Fiction Book Club

We are pleased to inform you that beginning in September we will be starting a new book club to read and discuss some of the greatest Catholic novels of past and present ages. Our Catholic Fiction Book Club is being organized now, so please consider joining us in exploring some of the wonderful works of Catholic literature and how their timeless themes relate to our own lives.

The book club will meet on the 2nd Wednesday of every month, in the evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Our first get-together is scheduled for September 9th, and the book we will be looking at is Exiles by Ron Hansen. In October we'll be reading A Thread of Grace, by Mary Doria Russell; and November's offering will be the classic tale Helena, by Evelyn Waugh.

Oops! I was just informed that tomorrow's presentation will NOT be Sophie Scholl but will be the film Spitfire Grill. Sophie Scholl will be our showing for next Friday, July 31st.

In the meantime, Spitfire Grill is the 1996 motion picture which deals with such themes as forgiveness and redemption. I can't embed the trailer here, but you can go to this link to see it (after an ad).

Faith & Film Night: Sophie Scholl

Tomorrow evening's film presentation is Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, the true story of the final sacrifice of Sophie Scholl, a twenty-one-year-old member of the anti-Nazi student-resistance group known as The White Rose.

This deeply moving film was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005.

Faith & Film Night: The Mission

This evening's presentation is the classic film, The Mission, starring Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro. The film deals with the experiences of a Jesuit missionary in South America during the 18th century. It's a great film to watch during the Year of the Priest, as Jeremy Irons' Father Gabriel is a wonderful role model symbolizing the dedicated and loving service of so many priests. Gabriel is a man of God and a man of peace: "If might is right, then love has no place in the world." This will be a great film to discuss.

Also, the music in this film is phenomenal. Composed by Ennio Morricone, the soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful.

Faith & Film Night: China Cry

China Cry is the true story of a young girl, Sung Neng Yee, growing up in Communist China during the 1950s. Although at first excited to become part of the Maoist regime's "new society," she witnesses the misery and hardship her family suffers under its repressive structures. The film is a testament to the power of faith to thrive under the harshest of circumstances.

Sung Novena to St. Paul

Faith & Film Night: I Am David

Our film presentation for this Friday's Faith and Film Night is I am David. This film tells the story of a twelve-year-old boy who makes an incredible escape from an east European prison camp and sets out upon an extraordinary quest of personal freedom.

Young David (played by Ben Tibber) has grown up in the camp with little knowledge about the outside world and scant remembrance of his family. Everything he knows about life he has learned from a kind fellow prisoner, played by Jim Caviezel. When David is helped to escape, he is handed a mysterious letter that launches him on a journey that will ultimately lead to the discovery of his own identity.

There are so many powerful themes in this film--including courage, trust, and forgiveness. The film also stars the wonderful Joan Plowright.

Faith & Film Night: Shadowlands

Join us tomorrow evening beginning at 6:30 for our next Faith & Film presentation, Shadowlands. This deeply moving drama stars Anthony Hopkins as C.S. Lewis, the Christian writer and apologist whose books (including Screwtape Letters and The Chronicles of Narnia, just to name a few) have been read and loved by millions.

The story centers around Lewis's relationship with Joy Gresham, an American writer with whom he falls in love. Debra Winger portrays the vivacious Joy, who shortly after her marriage to Lewis is diagnosed with cancer. Lewis, a middle-aged academic who never expected to experience romantic love, now struggles with heartbreaking reality as his happiness with Joy is cruelly cut short. His faith--which has been an anchor for him since his well-known conversion--is understandably tested at its core.

Both Hopkins and Winger are superb in their roles as persons deeply challenged by life circumstances yet who undergo profound personal and spiritual transformation.

This is a beautiful story and one sure to spark a wonderful discussion about suffering and love and the real meaning of faith. Hope to see you here!
